
John Scheffey
President
John M. Scheffey, PE is the Founder and Board Chairman of Core States Group, an engineering and architectural design firm with offices across the United States. John started the firm in his master bedroom in Atlanta in December of 1999, following an early career in the retail petroleum industry. John’s work ethic and athletic passion fueled the company’s 22-year growth trajectory to 18 offices and over 500 employees, ultimately leading to a successful exit to Private Equity in March of 2022. Under John’s leadership, Core States Group grew from a 1-person startup to number 235 on Engineering News Record’s (ENR) annual ranking of the Top 500 Engineering Firms in the United States.
John’s background includes a degree in Civil Engineering as well as professional licensure in numerous states, a late career management degree from Wharton, and an intense “any sport, any court” approach to any pursuits that catch his eye. During his run as CEO of Core States Group, John was recognized by most as a passionate leader who could get the most from his team, often believing in his people more than they believed in themselves. John is known to blend an engineers’ critical thinking capabilities with an understanding and compassion for the world around him. John is a board member of the Philadelphia chapter of the March of Dimes and Board Chair of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Philadelphia, an organization he is very passionate about.
